Online tournaments and offline ratings
Strange thing recently happened in Russia.
Russian rating commision decided to stop calculating offline rating in online events for 3k and better players. In the past it was possible even for dan players to improve their rating by playing in online tournaments like Insei League.
The reason is: one of the Russian Go players got 1k rank by attending some online events, but lost to 6-8k players in offline tournaments. It's not yet confirmed, but most players think that it was the reason of cheating in online events (someone stronger played instead or helped).
In Europe they don't count online events yet, except http://www.europeangodatabase.eu/EGD/Tournament_Card.php?&key=T100127B&pin=10313237
but it was decided to count European Pandanet Team Championship next year. From the EGF president's letter (December,2010):
The rating-commission has decided by majority to rate the games of the PGETC as type B tournaments (3 separate tournaments, to be put in the EGD in June 2011). As the decision came too late for the already running tournament I didn't see a fair way how to implement it (major rule-change but no way for a proper reaction by you). That's why in this season the games will NOT be implemented in the EGD.
What do you think about this problem?
