Kghin Slaughtered by Rising New Dan
schmatz is another new legitimate high dan that popped up yesterday. He registered in February but has not played much, this is his promotion game to 9d?. Not much is known about him except that his client is Chinese. Also, I assure alls fans of kghin out there that I am not against him, it is just unfortunate that kghin was the most recent victim of these two new 9ds.
The game starts off fairly normally in a Shusaku-like fuseki. In response to Black's outside attachment at 9, White responds with the interesting move of Q6. I have never seen it before. The result is very simple and White takes sente to grab R13, which is an eye-catching big point in the upper right. I am not sure with Black 15, but maybe it is better to play at Q15 instead? In the game Black forms a nice wall and takes sente to grab a big point on the bottom, but the wall seems completely useless. Also, his extension on the bottom at K4, it seems like it might be better at J4 since that would make it harder for White to approach inside (like the Chinese fuseki). White plays another sacrifice stragety by approaching the 3-4 immediately and then giving it up to take up another position outside. When White plays L17 on top to get out, I cannot understand Black's response at J16 at all. It makes no sense! It begs to be cut and I fail to see any benefit. Up to 44, Black has two weak groups.
After White plays a keima at 54, Black makes it more complicated by cutting at 59. In hindsight, maybe it would have been better to play at L9 with 54, though it may be too slow. Black plays really aggressively to try to capture White, but ends up being captured himself in the ensuing sequence up to 116. At this point, not only did Black lost both the top left group and his left side group that was split from the previous group. The game is over at this point. Black desperately inavdes with 117 to stir up chaos on the right side, but White handles simply and up to 156, White has captured the invading group. After a few more futile and desperate moves, Black resigns after White 174. White handled Black's overplays well from this game, and I think that schmatz can probably play at the 9d level, if not I am sure he will be a strong 8d.
