"bigbadwolf" 9d vs. "kghin" 8d - An Unexpected Finish!

This game was played just a few hours ago on KGS, with over 500 people watching it.

White G6 (move 16) was sharp, and Black lost a lot in that corner; in exchange of that local loss, he gained influence over the center up to move 41.

The fun begins with the M3 invasion (move 66). It's stimulating to watch the difficult fights as they unfold.

It looked as if White was leading right until the last moves... But somehow bigbadwolf decided to resign at move 253! It was a shocking decision because the game was really close... At best, kghin was ahead by half a point, but what is most surprising is how Andy could count so accurately and fast!

Is resigning like bigbadwolf did more classy than possibly losing the game by 0,5? What do you think?

As the famous chess Grandmaster Savielly Tartakower would say, "no game was ever won by resigning"!

Thanks for your comments.
I was not sure myself if that play was part of his plan. Of course there is only one way to find out, so today I decided to ask ???bigbadwolf??? himself if that actually was a mistake or a pre-planned tesuji.
It seems that it was a tesuji. :) I changed the article now. Below are excerpts from what Andy said:
bigbadwolf: tesuji
bigbadwolf: though I may have sacrificed too much
bigbadwolf: the move order might need some work
bigbadwolf: but the concept is sound

I agree with Uberdude. It's not a misread, it's just to make sure f14 is sente when it's played.
The influence gained is kinda irrelevant by this time as it's already yose.

I don't think white missed the ladder. Seems to me it was a probe to prepare the g17 f14 combo. If he does those moves first and then pulls out the ladder stone then black may just push across at e12 instead of ladder, sacrificing d10 stones but killing the entire upper left white group.

@njh: white really misread it. no matter how big the amount of time gained, giving away such a large amount of influence and points is not worth it. Black gained a ton of points on both sides afterwards. It's so painful.

@DanielTom: Thanks for the game and overview. It was easy to follow and well written. It seems that bbw was really demoralized from that ladder. How fast did he count? I'm guessing that at this point, he has a number in his head and just added and subtracted from there. Insane nevertheless. Anyways, thanks for churning these out. It was fun to read.

Did w really misread the ladder or was it a mixture of timesuji and intended sacrifice to connect?
